Method 1 of 4: Cleaning the Bong and Adding Water

  1. 1
Be knowledgable about the pieces of a bong. Water bongs are simple but sophisticated devices. They have several parts that work together, but knowing a bit about how they work together will hopefully help you get the most of out your, or your friend's, bong. Here are the components of a bong:
    • Inhale hole: This is the opening at the end of the tube where you place your mouth. When placing your mouth on the inhale hole, place your lips inside, not over, the hole.
    • Smoke chamber: This is where the smoke accumulates, ready to be inhaled.
    • Slide (bowl): The slide is a bowl on a bong. It's called a slide because most bong users remove it from the downstem as the final step before inhaling the smoke in the smoke chamber.
    • Downstem: A small tube that connects the water in the bottom of the bong to the seat of the slide.
    • Carb (choke, bink, rush, shotty, kick hole, etc.): A hole on the side of the bond above the water level, the carb is kept covered while the slide is being lit and then uncovered when the user is ready to inhale the smoke.
  2. 2
Make sure your bong is fully cleaned. If you've just gotten a new bong, skip this step. Otherwise, pay attention. Because a bong is a horrible thing to waste. Resin and other debris create a sour slurry commonly known as "bong water." At the very least, change out the water each time you smoke to avoid this. Some people prefer to give their bong a good cleaning once a week if it's used heavily. One thing is for sure: A clean bong makes for a much more pleasant smoking experience.
  3. 3
Add ice to your bong (optional). Ice will cool down the water in the bong, thereby cooling the smoke as it travels through the water. Be careful when you add ice into the chamber of the bong; don't throw it down so hard that it nicks or cracks any of the glass.
    • Some bongs have so-called "ice pinches," where the glass of the chamber is pinched to allow ice cubes to rest. These pinches further cool the smoke as it travels up the chamber.
  4. 4
Fill your bong with cold water, above the bottom of the downstem but not above the carb. The water level is pretty important. It should be low enough so that it doesn't spill out of the carb as you bend down to take a hit. And it should be deep enough to fully cleanse the smoke; at least one or two inches above the bottom of your downstem should do. The more water that touches the surface of the smoke, the smoother it becomes.
    • Some users prefer filling their water pipe with ice, and then adding just enough cold water so that the water pipe makes a bubbling sound when inhaled through.
    • Some users prefer very hot water because the steam helps bring moisture into the lungs. (The drying effect of smoke, not the heat of the smoke, is the main reason people cough while using a water pipe.) Obviously, if you want to use warmer water, skip the ice in Step 2.

EditMethod 2 of 4: Packing the Bowl

  1. 1
Remove the bowl from the bong so that you don't accidentally knock it over while packing. Safety, first. Right?
  2. 2
Clean out the bowl. First, make sure that enough airflow makes it through the bowl. Do this by gently blowing on the bowl-side of the slide, not the stem-side (where the stem hits the water). If plenty of air gets through easily, you're golden. If not, take a pointy implement like a safety pin and gently unpack any debris that may be lodged in the bowl. The key to a great, milky smoke is enough airflow.
  3. 3
Break up your smoking material, removing any seeds, stems, or leafs. Seeds, stems, and leafs will compromise the purity of your smoke, so it's best to remove them. It's probably best to break up your smoking material into two smallish nugs, with a little extra to pack on top. If you're using a grinder to grind up your smoking material, take a look through the smoking material and try to remove any seeds or stems before grinding it up.
    • Try to avoid using a grinder in order to break up smoking material for a bong. If you do choose to use a grinder, give it a quick, coarse grind. Too-finely ground smoking material can get sucked into the chamber and become extinguished before it has time to release its seductive smoke. This is sometimes referred to as "snapping the bowl."[2]
  4. 4
Line the bottom of the bowl with two smallish nugs and fill any gaps in the top with smaller nugs. The smaller nugs on top should be placed strategically so that pretty much the entire top of the bowl is equally lined with your choice of smoking material.
    • Make sure it's not so full that your smoking material will fall out of your bowl or so tightly-packed that no air sucks through. Usually, you should pack your material to a medium-light consistency. You want to get as much material in your bowl as possible while still being able to pull air through it with each inhale.
  5. 5
Place the slider back into the downstem of the bong.

EditMethod 3 of 4: Taking a Hit

  1. 1
Secure the bong with your left hand, preferably with the bottom of the bong resting on a flat surface. Novice bong users should always follow this rule: Keep the bong on a flat surface to minimize the chance of it falling and breaking. More advanced bong users can be seen gripping the bong without any support underneath.
    • If you can't find a flat surface to hold the bong on, rest the bong on your stomach area or in between your legs if it's big enough.
  2. 2
Place your mouth against the opening, forming a seal with your lips. Make sure that the entire opening is covered; otherwise, you won't be able to draw any smoke out.
    • Practice good bong etiquette by wiping your mouth, drying your lips, and placing your lips inside the inhale hole instead or entirely around it. This way, you'll do two good things: You'll create a better vacuum and you won't slobber all over the top of the bong, making the next hit pretty unpleasant for the next recipient.
  3. 3
Grip the water pipe, covering the carb with one hand. The carb is a small hole located somewhere on your water pipe, normally on the side.
  4. 4
Hold the lighter up to your bowl while simultaneously inhaling. Strike your lighter with your right hand at an upward angle, and then slowly tilt it down over the bowl while beginning to inhale.
    • If you don't want to inhale the fumes of a lighter, or simply don't want to deal with the hassle of managing a bunch of moving parts, try lighting a Bee line instead. Bee lines are organic lighting string that burn slowly and stay lit.
  5. 5
Keep inhaling, with the lighting implement perched over the bowl, waiting for the chamber to begin filling up with smoke. The key here is to inhale slowly. You don't want to be inhaling your smoking product so much as gathering smoke inside the bong's chamber (which you'll later inhale).
  6. 6
Before your lungs have reached their capacity, remove the light from the bowl, the slide from the downstem, and your finger from the carb.
  7. 7
Inhale any remaining smoke in the chamber in one big breath. If you've used the bong correctly, this should be one whopper of a hit.
    • Hold your breath. Try to hold the smoke in for six seconds at most, eighty percent of the smoke is absorbed on contact and the rest is absorbed over about five seconds. If it's your first time, make sure you suppress your cough. It is normal for new water pipe users to cough extremely hard, so be ready for this. Normally, five seconds will be good for most smoking mixtures. Slowly exhale until you see no more smoke coming out of your lungs.
  8. 8
If there's still smoke in the chamber, put back the slide and cover the inhale hole with an open palm.[3] This will keep the smoke from slowly escaping the bong. Exhale.
  9. 9
Clear out any remaining smoke from the chamber. Many smokers believe the smoke in the bottom of the chamber to be "stale," so it's up to you to decide if you want to smoke it.

EditMethod 4 of 4: Practicing Bong Etiquette

  1. 1
Try not to drool into the bong. The first couple times you hit a bong, it's easy to accidentally drool into it while you're inhaling. But this is bad smoking etiquette. No one wants to think about your drool as they're letting the relaxing calm of their smoking product begin to take hold. To avoid drooling into the bong, try these tricks:
    • If you feel drool start to drip out, stop inhaling, put out the bowl with the heel of your lighter and close your mouth. Do this while your mouth is still in its original position, without moving it from the inhale hole. Try to swallow as much drool as possible without exhaling.[4]
    • Stop inhaling, put the bowl out, take your mouth from the inhale hole withoutexhaling and cover the inhale hole with an open palm. Wipe your mouth and try again.
  2. 2
After each hit, wipe off the mouthpiece or inhale hole with a shirt or sleeve. You're probably among friends, but no one wants a wet one laid on them when they're taking a rip off of a bong.
  3. 3
If you're smoking with a group of people, don't light the entire bowl. It's rude to smoke all of what's in the bowl if you're supposed to share with other people. So ask the owner of the bong if what s/he's packing is a "one-hitter," meaning they've only put enough smoking product in for one rip. If it is, light the entire bowl. If it isn't, take a more measured approach:
    • Instead of focusing your lighter or Bee line over the center of the bowl, focus it on the side of the bowl, in one spot. This way, you'll get plenty of action while only smoking a small portion of the bowl, leaving the rest for anyone else who is smoking.
  4. 4
If the bowl is cashed after you're done smoking it, ash it instead of merely handing it off to the next person in line. Again, no one wants to smoke the dregs, so don't let them in the first place. Give the slide back to the person who packed the bowl. They'll either pack a new one or call it quits.
